Disk-Based Storage Innovator and Data Protection Leader Team to Deliver New Nexsan DeDupe SG Family to Help Customers Eliminate Data Redundancy and Realize Significant Storage and Energy Savings
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., and MELVILLE, N.Y., Aug. 11, 2009 – Nexsan Technologies, a leading provider of power-efficient disk-based storage and FalconStor Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: FALC), the provider of TOTALLY Open™ data protection solutions, today announced a strategic venture to deliver a joint solution, which has resulted in the delivery of an integrated deduplication product family for high-performance, power-efficient data storage. Based on Nexsan’s power-efficient storage systems and the FalconStor® File-interface Deduplication System (FDS) software, the new, Nexsan DeDupe SG (“Speed with Green”) product family will be delivered by Nexsan through its worldwide network of channel partners.
The cost of traditional storage solutions makes it difficult for organizations to efficiently backup and store their rapidly growing business and application data. Compounding this challenge are tight budgets which drive an increased demand for solutions that will improve operating efficiencies while meeting performance requirements. Nexsan and FalconStor have responded to this growing need with a reliable, disk-based storage product line which offers high-performance data deduplication that has been optimized for high density, power and cost efficiency.
“Nexsan and FalconStor have made a significant leap forward in the area of operating efficiency with the new Nexsan DeDupe SG,” said Lauren Whitehouse, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “The new self-optimizing capability of this product is very unique and will help companies realize benefits in both power and data efficiency while automating critical storage management processes.”
Storage deduplication systems are primarily used as backup targets, operating only during the backup window. Even though the typical backup window is less than eight hours a day, all other deduplication systems spin drives and burn energy for the remaining 16 hours, even while not in use. With Nexsan DeDupe SG, customers not only get higher capacity and better performance during their backups, they also save energy and reduce costs every hour that the system is not in use.
Nexsan DeDupe SG leverages the green efficiencies inherent to its industry-leading technology components: data reduction through high-speed deduplication, footprint reduction by utilizing space-efficient storage arrays, and substantial energy savings through AutoMAID technology. Nexsan DeDupe SG is the only high-performance, data deduplication solution with AutoMAID technology delivering “Speed with Green” to improve operational efficiency.
“The Nexsan DeDupe SG solution solves two very pressing customer needs — reducing capacity costs and improving operating efficiency,” said Michael McGuire, chief commercial officer for Nexsan. “With over 20 years of combined experience, FalconStor and Nexsan together continue their traditions of innovation by redefining deduplication and power efficiency and providing our global network of channel partners with a differentiated offering in one of the fastest growing market segments.”
FalconStor FDS, the deduplication engine for the Nexsan DeDupe SG family, is a block-level deduplication software solution that presents a network share interface as a backup repository, offering customers an easy-to-use, space-saving option for writing data efficiently and cost-effectively to disk. Nexsan DeDupe SG maximizes interoperability with all data sources, including disk-to-disk backup and archiving applications. It also can be deployed in any physical or virtual infrastructure environment, offering file-level access to a central block-level deduplication repository. Nexsan DeDupe SG uses policy-based concurrent and post-process deduplication methods for maximum flexibility. The product supports all major backup software, directly accepts Oracle RMAN, Microsoft SQL and other database dumps, and provides integrated data replication and deduplication.
“The Nexsan DeDupe SG system family offers the only solution that delivers both high-performance data deduplication and automated energy savings,” said Wendy Petty, vice president of North American Sales for FalconStor Software. “This FalconStor/Nexsan joint solution is focused on small-to-mid-sized enterprises but is attractive for all storage users. We are excited to offer this solution through Nexsan’s global channel network, leveraging their industry-leading closed channel lead registration model.”
“We see this joint solution as a win-win situation for the channel,” said Greg Knieriemen, vice president of Chi Corporation, a solutions provider specializing in data storage, backup and disaster recovery. “The combination of high-performance deduplication with the dramatic reduction of energy consumption makes this solution a ‘must have’ in nearly every IT environment concerned about reducing storage costs, power costs and the physical footprint for storage.”

ITV Builds Efficient, High-Performance Online Broadcasting Site with 100 TB of SATABeast Xi High-Density Storage for Apple Xserve and Mac Pro Systems
The Largest Commercial Television Network in the UK Increases Storage Throughput by 20 Percent with Small-Footprint, Energy Saving Solutions from Nexsan
Thousand Oaks, Calif., -- Nexsan, a leading provider of energy-efficient, long-term disk storage, today announced that ITV, the biggest commercial television network in the UK, has increased the storage capacity and performance for its online broadcasting site, ITV.com, by 20 percent with the high-density SATABeast Xi. Using Nexsan's evolutionary AutoMAID (Automatic Massive Array of Idle Disks) energy saving technology, ITV.com has also dramatically reduced overall datacenter power consumption and cooling costs without compromising online editing productivity.
The ITV Network is made up of 15 regional licenses, providing television to viewers across the UK. ITV Network is responsible for the commissioning, scheduling and marketing of network programs on ITV. Programs from ITV are provided by ITV’s in-house production unit and by the independent sector. Network programming covers a full range of genres, including drama, entertainment, news, current affairs factual, sport and children’s programming. This ensures that viewers across the UK are able to share in viewing some of the UK’s favorite programs.
The ITV.com online broadcasting site relies on its team of production editors which use the Apple Final Cut Studio 2 editing platform to prepare programs for the site. Because they are producing an increasing number of unique online video content, ITV.com found that it was rapidly stretching its existing 25TB storage infrastructure to the limits. To assure that the high-volume site was efficiently architected, ITV.com sought high-density storage systems that provided energy savings without impacting performance. With its new environment, ITV.com planned to grow its storage capacity to 100TB and increase performance without expanding its limited datacenter space.
"Our challenge was to increase the capacity from 25TB to 100TB and consolidate storage for our multiple online platforms into a single storage solution," said Chris Wood, Technical Manager for ITV Future Technologies. "It was also important to push the boundaries of what was possible with the platform to minimize unnecessary infrastructure expansion."
While ease of use, energy savings and performance were all critical decision factors, the requirement that was most difficult to meet was the footprint needed to house ITV.com’s desired 100TB of capacity. Of the solutions available to support a high-performance Apple environment, most would require up to 39U of rack space to deliver the capacity the broadcaster required. This would not only max-out their datacenter space, it would have also caused unacceptable heating and energy usage levels.
"The SATABeast Xi easily met our capacity needs in just three 4U units with advanced AutoMAID technology for additional energy conservation," said Wood. "And the performance is exceptional. We can achieve 1,200 MB per second on a single unit, and nearly 3,000 MB per second across the three. It is a truly powerful storage solution for a high-volume, high performance online editing environment. It surpasses our production editing needs in every way, both today and into tomorrow."
The SATABeast Xi is the highest density storage solution available in the Mac market today. It provides up to 42TB of storage in only 4U of rack space and is the only one of its caliber in the Xserve market to feature MAID (Massive Array of Idle Disks) technology. Nexsan’s AutoMAID allows SATABeast Xi to place its disk drives in a progressively more idle state based on user and application need to conserve energy yet provide near-instantaneous access to data. AutoMAID’s progressive settings make it ideal for multi-user systems with multiple applications like rich media, imaging, email, and many other business applications.

Franklin Synergy Bank Mitigates Concerns Over Complex Backup and Recovery with Disk-Based Backup Solution Based on Nexsan Storage Systems
Successful Independent Bank Selects Nexsan for Simplicity, Reliability and Value
Thousand Oaks, Calif., June 29, 2009 -- Nexsan, a leading provider of energy-efficient, long-term disk storage, today announced that Franklin Synergy Bank is ensuring simple, reliable and cost-efficient data recovery using Nexsan SATABoy™ storage systems as the hardware foundation for its disk-based backup and recovery environment. Using Nexsan AutoMAID™-enabled SATABoy disk storage, the successful independent bank ensures fast data recovery while reducing storage system energy requirements.
Opened in November of 2007, Franklin Synergy Bank located in Franklin, TN is a unique establishment bringing a combination of traditional community banking, such as trust, competence and expediency, with innovative, technologically-advanced delivery systems. This combination creates synergy, a process in which the sum of tailored banking products, advanced technology and dedicated bankers define a superior banking experience for customers. In building a data protection environment that would dovetail with the organization’s modern banking infrastructure, Franklin Synergy Bank sought to avoid the complexities and cost of tape-based backup. The company worked with IT Select, an IT solution provider, to deploy a disk-based backup and recovery solution based on Nexsan SATABoy storage systems.
Franklin Synergy Bank has deployed a Nexsan-based backup and recovery solution to protect data across 15 servers at three locations. The backup environment consists of two 14 TB capacity RAID 5 configured Nexsan SATABoy units with a unit located at Franklin Synergy Bank’s headquarters and another unit located at a designated disaster recovery (DR) banking location. The Nexsan SATABoy units are connected using iSCSI, providing ample throughput for rapid data recovery operations.
"To build a data protection environment that satisfied our requirements we moved beyond technologies of the past and deployed a solution that would be extremely efficient in terms of manageability and reliability, in addition to accommodating budgetary requirements," said Kevin Herrington, senior vice president and CIO of Franklin Synergy Bank. "Our selection of Nexsan was a wise choice as we have experienced stellar reliability and simplified operation. As we move forward, Nexsan will remain a respected and valuable technology partner."
With expensive and complicated backup and recovery options filling the market, Nexsan’s storage portfolio provides affordable alternatives that deliver advantages in storage density, usability, energy efficiency and overall value. Nexsan SATABoy maintains high sustained MB/s throughput for applications that include backup and recovery and provides the flexibility of choosing Fibre Channel, SAS or iSCSI for wire-speed connectivity. The system is also equipped with the evolutionary AutoMAID (Automatic Massive Array of Independent Disks) energy saving technology for up to 60% savings in power requirements without affecting performance.
"Organizations of all sizes are under pressure to do more with less. As illustrated in this deployment, Nexsan supports its customers with storage solutions built to solve business challenges, including the elimination of management complexity and unnecessary expense," said Bob Woolery, vice president of marketing for Nexsan. "As an added advantage, Nexsan users avoid trading performance and reliability to meet budgetary requirements – highlighting the value that Nexsan provides."
